Chapter 18

Darcy strolled towards the carriage in a huff and threw himself onto the seat before tapping on the roof informing the driver it was time to move on. Elizabeth had been waiting for him in the carriage after refreshing herself at the inn. She moved over when Darcy threw himself into the carriage. She watched in dread as he tapped his foot and stared stonily out into space. She worried for him as he was becoming more and more frustrated as they traveled further north. Though he was clearly discouraged at all the stops before now, this stop had made him much more aggravated than any other stop and she could not understand why. She waited patiently hoping that he would let her know.

After a few moments she could not take the wait, and placed her head on his shoulder. Relishing her love, he turned towards her, saying, “They were here.”

Elizabeth shook her head as if she did not understand. “Is that why you are so upset?”

“No, I have become accustomed to being told that intelligence.”

“Then why? Why are you so restless with this particular stop?”

“The man who reported seeing Georgiana and Wickham also stated that he saw them argue and Wickham forcibly throw her into the carriage. I knew that he would abuse her, but I did not expect that he would show his true colors so fast.”

Though Elizabeth knew the answer, she needed to get her husband to talk about it. Otherwise, it would consume him. “Are you worried that she is being mistreated?”

Darcy looked out the window before answering and Elizabeth was certain that she saw his eyes glisten. Clearing his throat before answering her, he huskily replied. “Yes. I knew that Wickham would not be a man who would take proper care of my sister. But now with this information, I am afraid in what condition she will be. To find out that she is possibly being victimized is killing me.”

Elizabeth gently squeezed his hand. “You cannot allow your imagination to get carried away. Maybe she is better treated than you are picturing. I like to think that she is well. I do not believe that she would allow Wickham to mistreat her. She is a strong, young lady.”

Darcy smiled. “That is one of the things that I love most about you. You are always optimistic no matter what you face.”

“It is not that I do not see reality. It is just that I prefer to look at the positive and hope for the best. No matter what may come, we will handle it together.”

Darcy nodded and pulled her into an embrace. “Despite being angry with Georgiana and being disgusted at what she has done, I do love her. I do not want any harm to come to her.”

“Of course not,” Elizabeth said, as she leaned her head on his shoulder. “That is one of the things I love about you. You take wonderful care of those around you.”
